Sustainability

We see a world where sustainability is simply built into living.

Our focus

We concentrate on the areas where we can make the biggest difference.

Reducing carbon. Building a better future.

We're committed to achieving net‑zero carbon emissions across our entire value chain by 2045, covering scope 1,2 and 3 without relying on offsetting. Our net‑zero sub‑targets set clear milestones to drive progress and continuous improvement across our projects and operations.

Sustainability policies & reporting

Our sustainability policies and procedures outline our commitments, measurable targets and the practical steps we take to reduce environmental impact, protect communities and operate ethically.

Real projects. Real results.

Boosting biodiversity

At Everton WRC, we transformed a wastewater site into a thriving wetland that boosts biodiversity, cleans water and benefits community. In partnership with Anglian Water, our three-cell, 18,320m² wetland with 110,000 native plants uses gravity to remove phosphorus and iron.

Carbon cutting at 105 Victoria Street

Working with with a specialist subcontractor we developed a bespoke aluminium stick system that delivered on performance and reduced carbon. Using reduced-carbon aluminium and extended profiles made from pre-consumer scrap, we saved 143 tCO2e.

Steelwork carbon savings at The Smith

Working closely with our structural steelwork contractor during detailed design, the project identified optioneering opportunities that reduced the overall steel quantity and enabled the use of a lower-carbon steel product, cutting embodied carbon by 35–50 kgCO2e/m².

Circularity in action

At our IPC Euston project we reclaimed structural steel and gave it a new purpose. Having lab tested and recertified 1970s steel & integrated it into the BIM and global stability model it could be safely reused. 20 tonnes were salvaged for future use, 3 tonnes reinstalled on site, cutting embodied carbon by 95%.

Hydrogen fuelled innovation

Cementation Skanska led ZECHER, a government-backed collaboration with ULEMCo and BRE, to deliver the first real-world hydrogen–diesel dual-fuel piling trial at our Bentley Works facility. The converted rig cut emissions and improved on-site air quality, proving conversions are viable for heavy machinery.

Low carbon highways

Our M42 J6 team's testbed for low carbon construction trialled alternative concrete mixes and basalt reinforcement to reduce embodied carbon. The result? Some concrete mixes delivered up to 80% savings and basalt rebar reduced carbon by almost 50%, and both met materials performance and durability needs.

Smart efficiency gains

Working with JLL, we delivered major carbon and energy reductions across two commercial buildings: 25% less carbon and £17,000 saved at 40 Gracechurch Street, and a 17% electricity cut at The Broadway. All achieved through low‑cost optimisation and no client investment.
